ACU 52- WT 35 We won!!!!! We won!!!!!

We beat WT last night 52-35!!!!! We led the entire game! It was an incredible game. WT was #1 in the regional rankings before the game last night, so a win was imperative! The #2 team in the nation lost so we should move to #2. There was a nasty article in the Amarillo paper (http://www.amarillo.com/stories/101508/wts_wtsports4.shtml) being very sarcastic towards our team. They pretty much dogged our quarterback and running back. The article also said WT was the underdog which is totally NOT true. Hmmmm... they have been ranked ahead of us in the regional poll, which is the poll that ultimately matters. Well how about 400 total yards (259 rushing, 141 receiving) by Bernard Scott alone!! Yes, you read that right! Absolutely unbelievable!

We're getting ready to go to church. Jason is teaching Sunday school and we got home at 4:00 a.m. 3 hours of sleep was worth it to see that game! The game was televised so I'm watching it while I'm gettting ready! Can't wait to watch it when I get home!

Scott leads #3 Wildcats to 52-35 win over #4 Buffaloes
CANYON – If there were any doubt about who the best player in NCAA Division II might be, Abilene Christian University running back Bernard Scott put it to rest Saturday night at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.Scott ran for 259 yards and had another 141 receiving yards and scored three touchdowns as the third-ranked Wildcats whipped fourth-ranked West Texas A&M, 52-35, in a much-anticipated Lone Star Conference South Division showdown in front of 19,380 fans.The win pushes the Wildcats to 7-0 overall, 6-0 in the LSC and 3-0 in the LSC South Division. The Buffaloes, meanwhile, fall to 7-1, 6-1 and 2-1. ACU -- which should move up to No. 1 in Super Regional Four and No. 2 in the nation this week -- will return to action Saturday when it hosts Tarleton State at 2 p.m. in the Wildcats' Homecoming contest at Shotwell Stadium.Scott – the runner-up for the Harlon Hill Award last year – made a strong case to win this year's trophy by punishing the Buffaloes and keeping them at bay as West Texas tried to rally from a 31-7 halftime deficit, cutting the lead to 38-28 at the end of the third quarter.But Scott was phenomenal in the second half, rushing for 185 yards and two touchdowns and posting 64 yards receiving in the game's final 30 minutes. He needed just 32 yards going into the game to break ACU's career rushing record of 3,047 yards by Wilbert Montgomery. In just 20 career games, Scott now has 3,275 rushing yards."I've got to give the offensive line all the credit," Scott said. "They did a great job tonight protecting (quarterback) Billy (Malone) and giving me room to run. It was a lot of fun out there tonight with the crowd and the atmosphere. That helped us raise our level of play and got us ready to go."

The Wildcats dominated the first half, carrying a 31-7 lead into the second half as Malone threw three first-half touchdowns, two to Johnny Knox and one to Scott.But the Buffs answered the challenge as the nation's top-ranked offense went down the field, scoring on their first drive of the third quarter on a Kelvin Thompson 5-yard run that cut the ACU lead to 31-14. Scott, though, had an answer for the Buffs as he went 47 yards for a score on a fourth-and-1 play from the WT 47, pushing the lead back to 38-14 with 10:59 left in the third quarter.Later in the third quarter, the Buffs capped a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Keith Null to Seth Hayden, cutting ACU's lead to 38-21. The Buffs then pulled out an onside kick, and all-America wide receiver Charly Martin fielded it, giving his team the ball at its own 45-yard line.It took just one play for the Buffs to cut the ACU lead to 38-28 as Null hit a wide-open Martin on a deep ball to the post, bringing the partisan WT crowd back into the game. But the Wildcats then put together what at the time was the team's biggest drive of the season.On second-and-3 from the ACU 40, Malone and Scott hooked for a 56-yard screen pass, sending the ball to the WTAM 4-yard line. But the Wildcats were stoned on three straight plays before the teams changed ends for the first play of the fourth quarter.On that fourth-and-goal play, Malone faked a handoff to Scott, who went into right side of the line and was stuffed at the 1-yard line. But he didn't have the ball – Malone did – and the senior quarterback rolled around left end for a 2-yard touchdown on a bootleg that no one knew was coming. After the PAT, ACU's lead was back to 45-28 after the first play of the fourth quarter."Billy and I were the only two guys who knew that Billy was going to keep the ball," Scott said. "It was a great fake by Billy and a great job to keep the ball. I just ran into the line and did a little bit of acting and Billy was able to get outside."But the Buffs roared right back down the field, going 63 yards on seven plays to a Null-to-Carl Johnson 23-yard touchdown pass to make it 45-35 with 12:45 left in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats then put together a drive that saw them eventually face a fourth-and-1 at the WT 34-yard line. Malone, though, was stopped up on a questionable spot, turning the ball over on downs.

Craig Harris then came up with the biggest defensive play of the season as he picked off a Null pass at the ACU 2-yard line on third-and-6. Null threw it up for grabs as he was looking for Martin, but Harris – playing behind Martin as he was double-teamed – grabbed the interception and returned it to the 17-yard line.Scott went 12 yards on first down and then another six yards to push the ball out to the ACU 35-yard line. He then put the icing on the cake with a 65-yard touchdown run that pushed the lead back to 17 points for the final points of the game."Bernard had a lot of tough runs tonight; a lot of 9-yard and 10-yard runs that were just tough, tough runs," ACU head coach Chris Thomsen said. "He won't take credit for a lot of those runs, but I'll give him credit because they were tough runs that kept the clock moving."Malone completed 24 of 41 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns and became the LSC's career leader in passing attempts, giving him every significant career passing record. His favorite target on the night was Johnny Knox, who had 10 catches for 203 yards and two touchdowns, his second straight game over the 200-yard receiving mark.

Perhaps lost in all the post-game chatter about Scott and the ACU offense was a clutch performance by the ACU defense. The Wildcats held the nation's No. 1-ranked offense to more than 60 yards and 10 points below its season averages and completely shut down any semblance of a WT running game. The Buffs ran for just 65 yards in the game and Keith Null was sacked twice and under constant pressure. The Wildcats created five turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles) as they improved their turnover ratio for the season to plus-21.

"I'm so proud of every one of our coaches, and it starts with our coordinators," Thomsen said. "Ken Collums (offensive coordinator) and Jason Johns (defensive coordinator) did a great job of leading their groups all week in practice and they both put together outstanding plans for this game. For our defense to do what it did tonight -- creating five turnovers and playing the way it did -- was just incredible. I'm so proud of our entire team and the effort they showed. It would have been easy to get rattled when WT came back to within 10 points a couple of times, but when you have the great leadership that we have on this team in guys like Billy Malone, Bernard, Joseph Thompson, Sam Collins, Mike Kern, Tony Harp and others, you find your confidence pretty quickly."
