ACU wins first outright LSC football title since 1973ABILENE -- Abilene Christian running back Bernard Scott ran for 201 yards and quarterback Billy Malone threw for 262 and four touchdowns Saturday as the nation's second-ranked team primed itself for the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 47-17 whipping of Midwestern State at Shotwell Stadium, giving them their first outright Lone Star Conference championship since 1973. The Wildcats (10-0) completed only the second perfect regular season in school history, joining the 1950 squad in that select company. The Wildcats will enter the Division II playoffs as the No. 1 seed in NCAA Division II Super Regional Four and will have a first-round bye. ACU -- which finished 9-0 in the LSC and 6-0 in the LSC South Division -- will host a second-round game on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Shotwell Stadium. The Wildcats last won a piece of the LSC football championship in 1977 when they shared the title with Texas A&M-Kingsville. Saturday's game hung in the balance until early in the third quarter when the Wildcats put the game away. ACU trailed throughout most of the first half until a flurry of 10 points in the final 3:24 of the half sent the Wildcats to the dressing room with a 23-17 lead. The ACU defense -- which gave up just 11 yards of offense in the second half -- forced a punt on the Mustangs' opening drive of the second half, turning the ball over to the Wildcat offense at the 5-yard line. Malone then directed a nine-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that was capped by Scott's only touchdown of the day, a 14-yard burst that made it 30-17 with 8:10 to play in the quarter. After another ACU defensive stand, the Wildcats got the ball back with six minutes left in the third quarter and they quickly found the end zone once again. Malone capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Holloway, making it a 37-17 game with 1:19 left in the quarter. The Wildcats capped the scoring in the fourth quarter when Malone hit Justin Andrews with a 10-yard touchdown pass -- his fourth of the day -- and Matt Adams kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:45 left in the game. Adams' field goal was his fourth of the day, tying the school record for field goals in a game and making him the only Wildcat placekicker in history to twice kick four field goals in a game. The Wildcats finished with 571 yards of offense against the league's second-ranked defense (allowing 294.8 ypg), including 278 yards on the ground against a team that ranked first in the LSC and fifth in the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 64.9 yards per game.
